Hamsi Taverna was brought to life through a close collaboration between chef Somer Sivrioğlu and hospitality partners Fatih Kulle and Berk Cemail from Efendy Group, with a shared vision to create a contemporary Turkish seaside tavern within Sydney’s iconic new Fish Market precinct.
Alkot Studio was engaged to translate this vision into a spatial experience — one that feels transportive yet grounded, generous yet refined. Inspired by the Black Sea and Aegean coastlines, the design embraces warmth, texture, and the rhythm of flame-led cooking.
Materiality became the narrative thread. Layered timbers, natural stone, textured finishes, and soft ambient lighting create depth and intimacy against the openness of the waterfront setting. Custom-designed furniture — from crafted timber seating to tailored banquettes — anchors the space, balancing comfort with character.
The open charcoal grill was intentionally celebrated as a focal point, reflecting the theatre and honesty of the cuisine. Every design decision considered both atmosphere and functionality, ensuring the venue transitions seamlessly from relaxed daytime dining to vibrant evenings by the water.
The result is a space that embodies the spirit of Hamsi — immersive, warm, and effortlessly coastal — shaped through thoughtful collaboration and detailed execution.
